Ionna, the new charging network supported by automakers such as GM, Hyundai, and Toyota, is moving towards a large-scale launch, leaving the beta testing phase.

Created as a joint venture among major manufacturers, including BMW, Honda, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, and Stellantis, Ionna emerges as a direct competitor to Tesla‘s Superchargers. The company plans to install more than 1,000 stations by the end of 2025, with the goal of surpassing 30,000 chargers by the end of the decade.

Since its announcement in February 2024, Ionna has already secured over 100 charging locations in the U.S., with initial openings in Houston (Texas), Abilene (Kansas), and Willcox (Arizona). Its fast DC chargers can operate at up to 400 kW or 200 kW when charging two vehicles simultaneously. Additionally, they will be compatible with both the CCS standard and Tesla’s NACS connector, allowing use by any electric vehicle, regardless of the manufacturer.

The infrastructure will be deployed along highways, in urban and rural areas, with some stations offering premium spaces. Additionally, Ionna has partnered with Amazon to integrate “Just Walk Out” technology into stores within its stations, enabling purchases without a traditional checkout process.
